CHURCH OF BONARIA

There are two churches on the hill of Bonaria.

The Shrine is the smaller and older church.

It was built in 1300 by the Catalans coming to Cagliari in order to dominate it.

Inside the church is the antique statue of the Madonna.

Legend has it that, during a storm, a wooden case was found on the beach, containing the statue.

The other church is bigger.
It was built in 1700 by the Fathers of Mercy from the nearby cloister.

Nearby the church is the city’s monumental cemetery, which was built over an older one.
